A 3-minute read
4 mistakes people make picking a jeweler for an engagement ring.
Most people pick a jeweler for a lab-grown engagement ring once in their life. These four mistakes are common, and each one is easy to fix once you know it’s there.

Trusting a GIA tag on a lab-grown stone.

GIA is the lab name most people know, so it’s the name that sells. But in October 2025, GIA stopped giving lab-grown stones color, clarity and cut grades.
That means a “GIA certified lab-grown” claim is one of two things. It’s an old report from before the change, or it’s a document that leaves out the three grades you’re paying for.
Either way, the tag doesn’t tell you what it sounds like it tells you.
The fix
Ask for the IGI report and read it before you pay. Look for the color, clarity and cut grades on the paper. If a jeweler can’t show you one, keep looking.
How our team helps
Every stone in our cases comes with its IGI report, and we’ll read it with you line by line before you decide anything.
How to read an IGI reportPicking a stone from a photo.

Two stones can share the same carat, color and clarity on paper and still look different in your hand.
Proportions change how light comes back out of a stone. A faint tint can hide under bright lights and show up at your kitchen table. Product photos are shot under studio lights, at the angle that sells, and often edited.
A photo flattens all of that into one picture. You find out the difference after the box is open.
The fix
Compare stones side by side, in person, in more than one light. Hold two next to each other and pick with your own eyes, not a screen.
How our team helps
We keep loose lab-grown stones in the case, so you can hold two side by side under the shop lights and by the window.
See what’s in our casesBuying a ring with no story in it.

She’ll be asked “where’s it from?” for decades. At dinners, at work, by her own kids one day.
A ring picked off a tray gives her a store name and a shrug. The answer she gives is the story she keeps.
The fix
Give her an answer. Engrave a date or a line inside the band. Hide a small stone under the setting that only she knows is there. Add a birthstone. Or start the design from something that’s already hers.
How our team helps
We engrave, set hidden stones and add birthstones in-house. If you’d like to see the idea first, our AI Designer can sketch it.
Sketch a hidden haloPaying a deposit before you’ve seen the design.

Plenty of jewelers ask for money down before you’ve seen a single drawing. You describe the ring out loud, you pay, and you wait.
Once the deposit is in, you’re committed to whatever comes back. A change means more time, more money, or both.
The fix
See it first. Ask for a drawing or a 3D design before any money changes hands, and don’t put a deposit on something you haven’t seen.
How our team helps
Design is free here and there’s no deposit to start. Picture it with our AI Designer, then we build the full 3D design with you.
