Carat size guide
How big is 2 to 5 carats, really?
Carat is weight, not width. What you see on a hand is the face-up diameter. Here is roughly how wide a well-cut round lab-grown diamond is at each size. For scale, a pencil eraser is about 6 to 7 mm.
2 ct
about 8.1 mm across
About 45% as wide as a US dime.
3 ct
about 9.3 mm across
About 52% as wide as a US dime.
4 ct
about 10.2 mm across
About 57% as wide as a US dime.
5 ct
about 11.0 mm across
About 61% as wide as a US dime.
These are approximate, for a well-cut round. Shape changes it: an oval, pear or emerald cut of the same weight is longer and narrower, and cut depth moves the number too. The IGI report lists each stone’s exact measurements.

Face-up width of a well-cut round, drawn to scale with each other and the dime. A pencil eraser is about 6–7 mm.

Hold a 3-carat before you buy.
A lab-grown diamond this size is a big decision. A screen can’t show you how it sits on your hand.
A photo sets its own lighting.
Product shots use studio lights and editing. Your kitchen, your office and the sun outside each show the stone differently.
A photo has no scale.
On a phone screen a stone can fill the frame at any size. You can’t tell 2 carats from 5 without a hand next to it.
Side by side settles it.
At the counter you hold two sizes next to each other on your own hand, with each IGI report beside it.

Every loose lab-grown diamond at Goody comes with one. Here is what it tells you before you ever look through a loupe.
Why IGI and not GIA?
In October 2025 GIA stopped giving lab-grown stones color, clarity and cut grades. IGI still grades all of them, so it is the report to ask for.
- Shape
- Round, oval, pear, emerald and so on, with the cutting style.
- Carat weight
- The exact weight, to the hundredth of a carat.
- Color
- A letter grade. D is the most colorless.
- Clarity
- How clean the stone is inside, from FL down through VVS, VS and SI.
- Cut grade
- How well the stone is proportioned to return light.
- Report number
- Type it into IGI’s own site and the same report comes up.
- Laboratory-grown
- The report states plainly that the stone was grown in a lab.
Bigger stone, same budget.
The number you set aside for a ring buys more stone when the stone is lab-grown.
- 01
Same crystal as a mined one.
A lab-grown diamond is carbon in the same crystal structure as a mined diamond. It has the same hardness and the same fire. The difference is where it grew.
- 02
Less per carat.
Growing a stone costs less than digging one out of the ground, so each carat costs less. That is the whole trick.
- 03
You choose where the budget goes.
Go a size up. Or keep the size and move up in color and clarity. Ask Goody to show you both side by side.
